About this event

In 1939, historian Constance Green published the first scholarly history of Holyoke, a book still relied upon today. In 1946, her husband Donald Green, a prominent local businessman, died suddenly and that event remains shrouded in mystery. Writer Amy Mittelman uncovered this story while researching her new book, Dames, Dishes and Degrees: Faculty Wives in America. Her talk will discuss the mystery of Donald Green and Constance Green’s in-depth history of Holyoke. Amy will also introduce her new book, which explores the origins, structure, and history of faculty wives’ clubs. Free and open to the public.

Amy Mittelman lives in Amherst, Massachusetts, and has a PhD in history from Columbia University and a bachelor’s degree in nursing from the University of Massachusetts. In 2007, she published Brewing Battles: A History of American Beer, and has also published articles, essays, reviews, and reference works. Her varied career and experience as a nurse, historian, author, faculty wife, mother, and businesswoman informs her writing.
