  • The Michael J. Dias Foundation announced Patrick Carpenter as its new executive director in Springfield — he will lead a campaign to open a new women’s sober house, expand recovery support services, and build community partnerships to address addiction.  BusinessWest
  • Freedom Credit Union invites Springfield residents to donate at any branch throughout Western Mass during January to support the Massachusetts Coalition for the Homeless. The funds will aid over 1,500 low-income households in finding shelter during the cold months (ensuring safety and warmth).  BusinessWest
  • A girl aged 8 saved her family from a hidden electrical fire by staying up late playing Roblox at 1 a.m. on Armory Street in Springfield (she woke her mother when power went out), officials said her quick thinking prevented tragedy even as the home suffered extensive damage.  Western Mass News

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Department of Public Health reported that flu cases are very high statewide, with three children dying and hospital visits rising in recent weeks. Health officials urge everyone to get vaccinated to help reduce the risk of severe illness.  NewsRadio 560 WHYN
  • Massachusetts health officials criticized the CDC’s new vaccine schedule today, saying the reduced immunizations could lower defenses against measles and whooping cough during a severe flu season while Governor Maura Healey and Public Health Commissioner Robbie Goldstein promised to maintain full vaccine access statewide.  NewsRadio 560 WHYN

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • The Springfield Preservation Trust completed phase one restoration on the historic building at 7-9 Stockbridge St. The project finished the roof and masonry work, and the trust will soon begin window and door repairs as it prepares for further renovations, with completion expected next year.  The Reminder
