BUSINESS NEWS

  • CRRC-MA will lay off 161 workers for two months starting March 16 because U.S. Customs still holds up needed subway-car shells, and the company will continue health care benefits while it works to resolve the issue so shipments can resume.  MassLive
  • On Jan. 11, a player won a $50,016.94 jackpot from a $2.50 bet on Dragon Link at MGM Springfield + a $5 bet on MoneyBall produced a $13,264.33 win the day before. The casino paid out over $100M in jackpots in 2025, with July recording the highest total.  MassLive

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Superintendent Sonia Dinnall said during her second state of the schools address on Friday, Jan. 16 at the Cedars Banquet Facility that she will combine last year’s Portrait of a Graduate initiative with four new priorities to boost student literacy, middle school rigor and career readiness for Springfield students.  MassLive

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Springfield will start enforcing a citywide parking ban at 7 p.m. on Saturday. The regulation applies to all on-street parking and urges residents to seek alternative spaces to avoid fines.  MassLive

  • Kaden (sons of former Celtic Eddie House) competed for Arizona Compass at the Hoophall Classic in Springfield on Saturday. Kaden scored 12 points while Kalek added six points and five assists as Arizona Compass edged Long Island Lutheran 59-58.  MassLive
  • Boston College commit Trey Beamer sat out Saturday’s Hoophall Classic in Springfield due to a broken hand from a three-week-old injury — upcoming evaluations will decide if he needs surgery and misses his senior season, though he remains in touch with coach Earl Grant to plan for next season.  MassLive
  • Imhotep Charter senior Latief Lorenzano-White, who became the first Panther to reach 1,000 career points, will play basketball at Drexel next season, staying local to keep close ties with family and friends. His leadership both on and off the court sets a high standard for the team.  MassLive
  • Central Catholic boys basketball lost in overtime to Bergen Catholic on Sunday at Blake Arena as senior Javi Lopez scored 36 points and led the team in a close contest. The Raiders, ranked No. 1 in Division I, will host rival Lawrence next.  MassLive
