COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A Springfield school honored state rep Bud Williams by renaming its gymnasium after him Friday evening at Putnam Vocational Technical Academy. City leaders including Mayor Domenic Sarno and Superintendent Sonia Dinnall attended the ceremony (Williams is a lifelong resident and former high school basketball star).  Western Mass News
  • With dangerously cold temperatures, Providence Ministries in Holyoke reopens a warming shelter Friday night where registration starts at 5 p.m. Meanwhile, CSO will provide shelter + support in Springfield and Northampton every day, including a facility that accepts pets and offers new coat donations.  Western Mass News
  • Local animal welfare groups and city officials are urging pet owners to bring pets indoors and offering extra shelter tips (like using safe, warm enclosures) as frigid temperatures persist today.  Western Mass News
  • The Lupa Zoo is caring for its animals during winter by using heated enclosures and shelters plus staff work non-stop to keep every creature safe; the zoo plans to reopen to visitors in April.  Western Mass News
  • On Christmas, Hopedale police ran over a raccoon they suspected of rabies, sparking anger and calls for improved methods (wildlife expert Jane Newhouse is offering police training on humane animal handling) after a similar incident in Springfield in 2024.  MassLive

CULTURE NEWS

  • In late 1775, Henry Knox led teams moving 60 tons of cannons across icy, rugged terrain in Western Massachusetts to help force the British out of Boston. He later chose Springfield for the nation’s first armory, and local markers along the Knox Trail honor his historic journey (opened in 1926).  Western Mass News
  • Three sisters from Longmeadow are competing on FOX's reality survival show Extracted for a quarter million dollar prize. They filmed in Canada in September and invite local viewers to tune in Monday at 8 p.m. on FOX 6.  Western Mass News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • SCORE Massachusetts and Rhode Island will offer a three-part online workshop series called Marketing Your Business in the Digital World on Saturday mornings, Feb. 7, 14, and 21 from 9 a.m. to noon. The sessions cost ($50 fee covers all three) and include breakout groups with SCORE mentors.  BusinessWest

  • During last Sunday's AFC Championship, Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels surprised quarterback Drake Maye by radioing a bootleg run play with 1:57 left. The unexpected switch—which caught teammates off guard—allowed Maye to secure a crucial first down and complete a 10-7 victory.  MassLive
