CULTURE NEWS

  • On Feb. 1, the city celebrated Black History Month with the 40th flag raising at City Hall, featuring the first Black female school superintendent & police superintendent and a ceremony honoring civil rights leader Delois Swan. Leaders reflected on past milestones and called for continued local progress.  MassLive
  • Longmeadow sisters Katie, Carly and Emily Kratovil compete on Fox’s survival show Extracted, where Katie faces the wilderness while her sisters direct supplies from HQ (their strategy leans on a strong family bond). The next episode airs today at 8 p.m. on Fox.  MassLive
  • Bunny Depergola will host Cooking with Bunny classes (named in honor of her late husband) at a venue in Agawam on Tuesday, Friday, and Saturday nights. Small groups (12–15 people) will learn her late husband Patsy’s favorite recipe for zupa clams to keep his memory alive.  Western Mass News

  • The Red Sox acquired right-handed pitching prospect Gage Ziehl on Sunday in a trade sending Jordan Hicks and prospect David Sandlin to the White Sox. Ziehl — a 22-year-old who posted a 4.12 ERA in 22 minor league outings — is expected to strengthen the pitching roster.  MassLive
  • South Hadley boys indoor track & field team won the Pioneer Valley Interscholastic Athletic Conference championship with 115 points at Smith College on Sunday, while Hampshire girls captured their title with 126 points by clinching the final relay. Their wins marked significant milestones for both teams.  MassLive
  • After a winter storm delay, the Pioneer Valley Interscholastic Athletic Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships were held at Smith College on Sunday morning, with Longmeadow boys winning at 122 points and Amherst girls taking relays while Springfield Central’s Rodriguez brothers and Northampton’s Mairead O’Neil scored individual wins.  MassLive
  • The Springfield Thunderbirds clinched a 4-1 win last Saturday night at the MassMutual Center during their 10th annual Hometown Heroes game. The event honored local emergency personnel and featured a parade of emergency vehicles + a tribute to fallen heroes.  Western Mass News
  • Chicopee Comp’s boys basketball team bounced back with a 60-48 win over Minnechaug Saturday, Jan. 31, led by Elijah Kleps’ 24 points. Following a loss to Pope Francis, coach Gavin Miller said the Colts flushed off the setback as they focused on improving for upcoming playoff games.  MassLive
