  • Rocky's Ace Hardware customers raised $113,930 at eight locations by rounding up purchases to support Children's Miracle Network Hospitals that serve local families. More than $23,925 was directed to Baystate Children's Hospital + the company plans further campaigns to support pediatric care.  BusinessWest
  • TJO—the Thomas J. O’Connor Animal Control and Adoption Center—and MSPCA-partnered shelters are hosting a 'Worth the Wait' adopt-a-thon that waives fees for animals in their care for 30 days; the event begins Friday, Feb. 13 and runs through Sunday.  Western Mass News

  • A house fire on Sunday night left 16 residents displaced while one family of six lost their home + their puppy in freezing conditions, and they now seek local support as the delayed response worsens their winter hardship.  Western Mass News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Holyoke Community College kicked off its Black History Month series on Wednesday with a discussion led by Vilenti Tulloch (co-founder of the Academic Leadership Association of Greater Springfield) that focused on closing the achievement gap and boosting educator diversity; additional events will occur throughout the month.  Western Mass News
  • HOPE Center for the Arts in Springfield received a $5 million federal earmark to address building repairs including a failing HVAC system and to expand its free arts, literacy, and college prep programs for local students. The funding comes from a Feb. 3 bill that allocated $124.58 million for community projects.  The Reminder

  • Maria Ligus was fired as director of the New North Citizens’ Council Wednesday after months of turmoil, and a settlement was reached with former housing specialist Perez. Interim director Vanessa Otero was named as the permanent executive director & will work to refocus the agency’s community programs.  MassLive
