CULTURE NEWS

  • The Westfield-West Springfield Elks Lodge at 5 Franklin St. will host a comedy night fundraiser on Sat., Feb. 28 – featuring Charlie Nadler, Paul Nardizzi, and Kristy Kielbasinski with Jim Ruberti as the host. Tickets are $25, doors open at 6 p.m. and the show starts at 7:30 p.m.  MassLive
  • Old Sturbridge Village invites visitors to explore 200 acres of 19th-century life with more than 40 historic buildings; the living museum, which opened in 1946, offers costumed historian talks, artisanal trade shops, working farms and horse-drawn rides to educate future generations.  Western Mass News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • High schoolers from the Hampden DA Youth Advisory Board taught internet safety to fifth graders at Gerena Community School, explaining trusted adults and how to avoid online risks (including cyberbullying and stranger danger); the initiative began in October and continued in December to safeguard younger students.  MassLive

  • The Springfield International Bulldogs wrapped up their season on Thursday with a 76-63 win over Chicopee, led by sophomore guard Jaylen McIver who scored 28 points (marking his 1,000th career point) and setting the stage for a promising next season.  MassLive
  • Christian Gonzalez said he wants to remain with the Patriots and secure a contract extension. The team is expected to finalize terms soon as they work to lock in the star cornerback known for key playoff plays.  MassLive
  • Longmeadow freshman Kashton Ryan won all seven races at the recent PVIAC championships and claimed a combined title, and he will compete at the MIAA Alpine Ski Championships on Feb. 24 at Berkshire East.  MassLive
  • Kelly Curtis, the first Springfield College alum to appear in multiple Winter Olympics, is racing for Team USA in today’s women’s skeleton event in Cortina + she is top-ranked on the World Cup Tour and could earn a second medal in the mixed team event on Sunday.  MassLive
  • Ludlow senior Jackson Mateus scored his 1,000th point on Thursday, Feb. 12 at Mullins Gymnasium during an overtime game against Hampshire Regional. He became the first boy to reach the milestone in over 20 years and has set a high standard for his teammates.  MassLive
  • Roman Anthony of the Red Sox will join Team USA if he passes his physical today at Fenway South. He is set to replace injured Corbin Carroll in the World Baseball Classic that begins March 6 in Houston.  MassLive
