  • Bishop Timothy McDonnell (88) passed away Thursday after a long career guiding parishes through tough times. A viewing will be held at St. Joseph’s Church in Pittsfield on March 12 from 4 to 6 p.m., with a lay in state at St. Michael’s Cathedral in Springfield on March 13.  MassLive

  • Y Combinator CEO Garry Tan said the accelerator is thinking about opening a new Cambridge office for biotech, robotics, and hardware startups amid concerns over California's tech rules.   • The Hope for Youth Performing Arts Center received a $5M federal grant at a ribbon-cutting held Friday in downtown Springfield.   • The DEP fined Toby Realty Trust $31,000 for not cleaning up a fuel leak at 274 Taylor St. – the company was repeatedly asked to meet cleanup deadlines but did not comply with environmental regulations set after gasoline leaked from underground tanks in 1990.  MassLive

SPORTS NEWS

  • Drury girls basketball beat Hoosac Valley 47-41 on Friday in North Adams. Delaney Hayden scored 18 points with 15 coming from three-pointers to help secure the team's spot in the Division V semifinals.  MassLive
  • Springfield Central beat BC High 62-56 Friday night to earn a spot in the Division I state semifinals. Star players Tahir Bey and Aden Cabrera led the team with strong plays (including key free throws and rebounds) in an upset win.  MassLive
  • Basketball Hall of Fame leaders Julius 'Dr. J' Erving and Jerry Colangelo wrote a letter on Friday to Mayor Sarno pledging support for a new Competitive Play Center in Springfield to keep the Hoophall Classic local after talks of a Boston move.  MassLive
  • Stepping Beyond Sports will partner with the Western Massachusetts Senior All-Star Game on Friday, March 20, from 5:30 to 9 p.m. at the Basketball Hall of Fame.
