ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Five people were displaced by a fire at 94 Abbott Street on Tuesday — firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze in the basement and no injuries were reported, with the Red Cross assisting affected residents.  Western Mass News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Springfield Symphony Orchestra will perform a Women’s History Month concert on Saturday, March 14 at Symphony Hall at 7:30 p.m., featuring works by women composers with guest conductor Mei-Ann Chen and pianist Claire Huangci. A pre-concert reception will honor Fearless Women Award recipients (tickets begin at $25).  MassLive

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Phoenix Charter Academy has launched the free Pathway to College program with American International College, giving high school students a chance to earn transferable college credits. More than 25 students (about 15% of the student body) will begin earning credits in March.  BusinessWest
  • East Longmeadow entrepreneur Erin Rosario launched Ryse 361, a leadership development program to help student-athletes improve skills and mindset. The first Student-Athlete Leadership Circle session will be held Wednesday, March 18 online (via Zoom), with monthly sessions planned for continuous growth.  BusinessWest
  • Monson Savings Bank offers $28K in scholarships to local high school seniors in the Monson, Ware, Hampden-Wilbraham, and East Longmeadow school districts who plan to pursue higher education. ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Record high temperatures have boosted snowmelt and raised river levels in Springfield from 2.4 feet on Sunday to 3.3 feet Tuesday morning, with forecasts reaching 9.1 feet by Thursday; heavy rains expected this Sunday may increase flood risk in the Connecticut River Valley.  MassLive

  • West Springfield Mayor Will Reichelt reminded residents to properly dispose of trash as melting snow revealed illegally dumped items by the railroad crossing near the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Bridge.   • The state increased heating assistance benefits on Tuesday to help tens of thousands as residents who heat with oil face a full fill-up costing over $1,000 amid climbing prices and cooler weather — experts noted prices may drop if warmer conditions persist.  Western Mass News
