  • Guest conductor Cailin Marcel Manson will lead the Springfield Symphony Orchestra in the 'Eternal Echoes' concert on Saturday, March 15 at Springfield Symphony Hall—featuring works by Ennio Morricone, James Rutter and Tchaikovsky with guest soprano Jamie-Rose Guarrine and the Springfield Symphony Chorus.  MassLive

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Before the pandemic, Massachusetts was seen as a leader in education but student math and reading scores have been falling since 2015 due to early signs of learning gaps. Springfield schools are slowly recovering with more arts, pre-kindergarten programs and support services, though challenges such as chronic absenteeism and funding shortages still slow progress.  MassLive
  • Education advocates said that only 20% of Black, Latino and low-income fourth graders scored proficient in reading last year while 40% of all students did, fueling a push for change. A statewide campaign urges schools and lawmakers to adopt proved reading methods—an effort to help every child reach their potential.  MassLive

  • The Social Security Administration will soon cut its workforce and many seniors are worried—retired case manager Carmen Oyola shared her concerns at the Raymond A. Jordan Senior Center in Springfield, asking how they will pay their bills.  MassLive
  • Housing and Livable Communities Secretary Ed Augustus visited affordable housing units in Springfield and Wilbraham Tuesday as part of his tour of the state's 229 housing authorities—he has already seen 100 and noted that western Massachusetts faces challenges since building costs remain high while market returns lag. He explained that these issues, including older housing stock, make it harder to fund new projects.  New England Public Media

HEALTH NEWS

  • Baystate Wing Hospital in Palmer advised a limited number of patients who had surgery in February to test for hepatitis, HIV and other bloodborne pathogens after a possible sterilizer failure was discovered during routine checks—officials say the risk is very low, staff have been retrained, and state health officials are monitoring the issue.  MassLive
