  • Freedom Credit Union is hosting free spring shred days to help residents dispose of sensitive documents and reduce identity theft risks; events will run 9-11 a.m. at branches in Feeding Hills, West Springfield and Springfield (limit of 5 file boxes or paper bags per vehicle).  Western Mass News

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A pothole outside the Monkey Wrench Building on Main Street caused eight cars to get flat tires Monday at 9:30 p.m. and led property manager Armando Ruiz to call the city for temporary cones—officials said crews are busy patching similar issues.  Western Mass News

  • Springfield Prep Charter School has named Meghan Wagner as its new executive director effective April 1. Wagner, who has over 16 years of education experience, has worked as the school’s chief operating and financial officer, and the board expects continued growth (with new challenges ahead) under her leadership.  BusinessWest
  • Plans for Springfield’s new German Gerena School are moving forward at the former Chestnut Junior High site (a Tuesday evening meeting gave North End families a chance to review design options) as officials target an August opening for a modern building.  Western Mass News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Wildlife experts advise local residents to bear-proof their yards due to active bear season. Tips include storing trash on collection day, taking bird feeders inside, and using noise to make bears leave + residents are encouraged to follow these steps to avoid unexpected encounters.  Western Mass News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Massachusetts boaters must obtain a safety certificate by passing a required 12-hour course starting April 1 under the Hanson Milone Act of 2024. Local marinas and law enforcement are offering both in-person (free) and online classes to help residents stay safe on the water.  Western Mass News
  • Morgan Road between Blossom and Appaloosa in West Springfield is closed today from 8:30 a.m. until noon as crews repair damage from a sewer main collapse — a new raised crosswalk is planned nearby.  Western Mass News

SPORTS NEWS

  • Pope Francis Prep School celebrated its second state hockey championship on Tuesday after the Cardinals beat Saint John’s 2-1 in a double-overtime game last weekend. The school hosted a rally in its gym to honor the team.  Western Mass News
  • Western Mass high school softball teams will start the season on Thursday at 4 p.m. after the Pioneer Valley Interscholastic Athletic Conference realigned 41 teams and grouped them into conferences of five to eight teams— coaches expect a competitive season with new matchups that could shape postseason prospects.  MassLive
  • MassLive released the Western Mass softball Super 7 list yesterday, Mar. 24, naming top high school players including Frontier’s shortstop, Skyler Steele, and Hoosac Valley’s third baseman, Izabella Tart — whose strong stats last season impressed many — as they prepare for the upcoming season.  MassLive
  • Boston Bruins first-round pick James Hagens—set for his pro hockey debut—will take the ice for the Springfield Thunderbirds tonight at the MassMutual Center against Providence at 7:05 p.m.  Western Mass News
  • The Thunderbirds are set to host the 16th Annual Cammer Cup on April 4 at the Thunderdome in Springfield — the event includes a local celebrity game, a travel team match and a contest with the Syracuse Crunch, with ticket sales supporting CHD’s youth and adult sled hockey programs.  Western Mass News
