  • Springfield Partners for Community Action is offering a free financial literacy program that helps Springfield residents learn essential budgeting and credit management skills as rising prices affect food and utilities. A workshop will be held on April 5 from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Springfield Partners office on 721 State St (certificate awarded upon completion).  The Reminder
  • In April, Freedom Credit Union invited community members to donate money at its branches across Western Mass (to benefit Way Finders, a Springfield-based agency that provides emergency housing assistance and support). CRIME NEWS

  • The district attorney said Rockland Baines—convicted at age 17 for a Springfield shooting—has not earned parole after he received 68 disciplinary reports while incarcerated. Baines was granted parole, but the office maintains he did not show enough change.  MassLive
  • Springfield police responded to a shooting call on the 0-100 block of Hebron Street at 5:40 a.m. on Wednesday—two men were found dead inside a home and pronounced dead at Baystate Medical Center as the investigation continues.  Western Mass News
  • Four undocumented workers from Red Fire Farm were arrested in Springfield during an ICE raid in March, and farm advocates from Community Involved in Sustaining Agriculture are teaching farmers about due process + workers' rights as many fear more arrests and a drop in food production.  New England Public Media
  • Before 6:00 a.m. today, Springfield police responded to a call on the 100 block of Hebron Avenue where they found two men shot inside a home and both later died at the hospital—with no arrests made.  NewsRadio 560 WHYN
  • The suspect accused of fatally hitting three road crew workers near an exit on I-91 north in West Springfield appeared in court yesterday—his bail hearing was rescheduled for later this month as he faces a $1 million cash bail.  Western Mass News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno, Police Superintendent Lawrence Akers, and Councilor Lavar Click-Bruce said the city is cracking down on illegal dirt bikes to keep people safe as warmer weather brings more riders. The city will use new tactics and work with state Rep. Orlando Ramos on a plan to let officers seize and destroy bikes after a serious violation — a move set to stop repeat offenses — while urging riders to use legal areas outside the city.  The Reminder
