  • On Saturday, the first ever NAACP Caregiver Symposium was held in Springfield. NAACP member Freda Malone said attendees (caregivers for children and the elderly) received educational resources and honored seven local caregivers.  Western Mass News
  • On April 24, the Hampden County Sheriff’s Department will host the 26th graduation and celebration of recovery for the All-Inclusive Support Services program at The Cedars (75 Island Pond Road, Springfield) starting at 5 p.m. The program (which lifts up marginalized voices) will honor individuals for their recovery achievements.  MassLive

CRIME NEWS

  • A Massachusetts man and his brother were sentenced to one year of probation and fined $9,500 after pleading guilty in October 2024 to a scheme that misbranded face masks as N95 respirators, which led a hospital to pay about $2.6 million for roughly 850,000 masks that did not meet NIOSH standards.  MassLive

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Saturday, protesters in Hadley held a Tesla Takedown demonstration to protest Elon Musk's actions that they say aim to weaken the federal government. Organizers stressed the protest was peaceful and that they did not target Tesla drivers.  Western Mass News
  • The state’s Asset Management Board approved a plan in late January for proposals from private developers to design, build and lease a new 330,000 square foot courthouse to replace the problem-filled Roderick Ireland Courthouse. City Councilor Timothy Allen expressed concern that few have weighed in—he will hold a Finance Committee meeting on April 30 at 6 p.m. to invite more community input.  MassLive
  • Springfield Police Superintendent Lawrence Akers said the department does not work directly with ICE on immigration enforcement but will respond to public safety calls. The department follows a welcome ordinance (passed in 2018) that limits inquiries about immigration status unless required by law.  MassLive

  • Gracie is a 12-year-old cat with green eyes and a plush gray coat who was surrendered to Dakin Humane Society in Springfield after her owner passed away. The humane society waived her adoption fee to help her find a loving home for a senior companion.  MassLive
