- ➤ West Springfield Town Common earned Level I Accreditation from the ArbNet Arboretum Accreditation Program, meeting standards for arboreta and botanic gardens; a special Earth Day event will be held at 11 a.m. on the Town Common. - ➤ Max Tavern at the Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield announced its seventh Max on Monday networking event. - ➤ A 25-year-old man named Anthony Domino was arrested in an apartment on Chestnut Street before 8 a.m. Wednesday by Springfield Police, Hampden County Sheriff’s Department, and the U.S. Marshall Fugitive Task Force for firearms charges stemming from Connecticut, with further details on the charges unknown. - ➤ On Wednesday, Springfield police arrested 20-year-old Daniel Walker after his four-wheeler hit a police cruiser when he revved the engine at a red light in the Fuller Road and Sheridan Street area—though he fled into nearby woods, he was quickly caught and now faces several reckless driving charges along with a prior incident from September. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The City Council approved just over $5 million in Chapter 90 funds to pave about 25 streets on April 7 — most funds will go toward repairing arterial and residential roads. DPW Director Chris Cignoli said work will begin in late May or early June — the city also approved over $807,000 from the FY25 Fair Share Amendment to cover design work, maintenance, and equipment. - ➤ On April 7, the Springfield City Council approved lowering the fine for container placement violations from $250 to $50 and set plans to officially adopt the change on May 12. The council also approved new trash service rules that require parcels with an accessory dwelling unit to have separate pickup—clarifying an appeals process for service revocations. The Reminder
- ➤ Fire crews responded late Thursday morning when a bottle with an unknown substance was found outside the United States Postal Service distribution center on Worcester Street in Indian Orchard+ a hazmat team was then called to investigate the contents while no injuries or evacuations were reported.
