CRIME NEWS

  • Karen Read’s murder retrial resumes today in Massachusetts as her legal team said jurors allegedly agreed on some acquittal in her first trial + the Supreme Court denied her double jeopardy appeal while technical evidence will be presented later.  NewsRadio 560 WHYN
  • The FBI took a rare 1868 trapdoor carbine from Springfield Armory after it was stolen and its serial number was defaced to hide that fact — a court action is now pending to let others contest the seizure.  MassLive
  • A Belchertown man, Victor Oquendo, was sentenced to life without parole for the first-degree murder of Chad Alexander in a shooting outside a home in Springfield on Nov. 28, 2021; he also received concurrent sentences for armed assault and illegal possession of firearms.  MassLive

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Massachusetts has launched a two-year $25 million scholarship program for behavioral health graduate students—offering up to $25,000 per recipient to cover tuition, fees and stipends. The program prioritizes applicants from communities with high racial disparities—applications are accepted through June 15.  MassLive

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City Council approved a new police contract on Monday that gives more than 400 officers a 3.5% raise each year for four years, with starting pay raised to $75,132 and top pay at $86,542, costing about $1.4 million in the first year. The contract also adds benefits such as extended paid bereavement leave and a new app for booking off-duty work—about 45 new officers will join once they graduate from the academy.  MassLive
  • Massachusetts experienced a solar milestone on April 20 when sunny skies produced enough power to meet nearly half the grid’s demand during duck curve days—highlighting the need for major grid updates to accommodate more renewable energy. House lawmakers begin their budget debate this week with over 1,600 amendments, including extra funding requests for local food pantries and community projects, and they expect to add about $100 million in additional spending.  New England Public Media
