GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On April 22, U.S. Rep Richard Neal met with veterans and local officials at the Ludlow Veterans Center to review how federal staffing cuts and policy changes are reducing VA care—veterans reported longer waits and fewer in-person appointments. Neal warned these changes risk lowering the quality of service that veterans rely on.  The Reminder
  • The U.S. Attorney’s Office filed a civil forfeiture action on a historic 1868 Springfield Armory carbine believed to have been stolen decades ago after a federal law enforcement investigation seized the weapon in 2023. The carbine (one of only four ever produced) is now the subject of a legal process to determine its rightful ownership.  Western Mass News
  • The Office of Community Development is holding a public hearing today at 5 p.m. at Brightwood Public Library to review draft plans for housing and community development, and residents may submit comments in person or in writing until May 9 at 4 p.m.—all feedback will be added to the five-year plan submitted to HUD on May 15.  The Reminder
  • Residents at City Hall Chambers argued the new courthouse must be located downtown while suggesting alternatives like splitting the building or rebuilding on the current site — city officials explained that a private developer will construct a 330,000 square-foot courthouse under a 60-year lease with proposals issued in late spring; construction is expected to begin in late 2026 — and they welcomed more input on downtown’s definition. This plan aims to boost economic growth by increasing taxable revenue and reducing long-term costs.  MassLive

  • Baystate Health will cut 43 jobs this week as part of a restructuring plan that started last fall to improve its financial situation—most cuts come through retirements and attrition.
