BUSINESS NEWS

  • Gas prices jumped 31 cents this week and Springfield food truck owners are already passing the cost on to customers. William Osorio and others reported an extra fuel expense of about $120 weekly to keep their trucks running.  Western Mass News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • American International College raised $228,090 from 856 donors during its AIC Gives campaign held April 7-9 (supporting scholarships, academic programs, athletics, and campus initiatives). The fundraiser extended beyond its original 48-hour period amid contributions from 28 states, one territory, and 13 countries.  BusinessWest
  • Springfield schools selected Chartwells Dining Services to supply free breakfast and lunch to 23,700 students in 64 schools beginning July 1 + the $28 million contract runs for one year with an option for four more years, replacing Sodexo after audit issues arose.  MassLive

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Officials from the Food Bank of Western Mass warned that the passed Farm Bill fails to address SNAP cuts and shifts 75% of administrative costs to states next year while requiring SNAP contributions in 2028.   • Former ambassador Alan Leventhal met with local housing advocates and city leaders in Springfield last week to discuss affordable housing and the ongoing rent control debate. He is touring the state to learn local perspectives and will later offer his recommendations to policymakers & improve government transparency.  MassLive

  • Playoff hockey returns today as the Thunderbirds will host the Providence Bruins at the MassMutual Center at 7:05 p.m. in Game 3 of their second-round Calder Cup series—riding a road win and strong goalie Romanov—the team aims for another victory.  Western Mass News
