  • One Springfield resident continues cleaning up from Saturday's storm that left fallen trees and branches scattered around her yard plus across her neighborhood. Her husband is still removing debris as extra rain is expected in the coming days.  Western Mass News

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Ford is recalling over 160,000 Ford and Lincoln SUVs and trucks with malfunctioning rearview cameras — a fault that may produce blank or distorted images — while GM is recalling nearly 600,000 Cadillac, Chevrolet and GMC vehicles that risk engine damage; owners should contact local dealers for free repairs. Ford owners received notification letters on May 5 and GM owners will get theirs on June 9.  MassLive

  • MGM Springfield will host its Free Music Fridays Concert Series on The Plaza every Friday from May 23 to Sept. 5 with shows starting at 7:30 p.m.—except on July 4 when concerts begin at 6 p.m. The event, in partnership with White Lion Brewing and local food trucks, will kick off with The Eagles Experience and feature bands and artists from around the region.  BusinessWest

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The EPA terminated nearly $20 million in grant funding aimed at supporting green projects in disadvantaged neighborhoods across Springfield—city officials plan to dispute the cancellation.  MassLive
  • Lawmakers have repeatedly voted down a bill meant to help Springfield homeowners fix crumbling foundations from pyrrhotite as they hesitate to commit $100M in funding. Representative Brian Ashe, who has worked on the issue for nearly a decade, said the plan—modeled after Connecticut’s approach and including reimbursement for home tests—remains stalled despite calls for change.  Western Mass News
  • Neely Murray and her dog died when a car struck them on Piper Road near Monastery Avenue on Dec. 20 at around 5:30 p.m.—her father is suing West Springfield for wrongful death, alleging the town failed to maintain proper lighting and warning signs at the crosswalk.  MassLive
  • Legislators are hearing testimony today at 1 p.m. at the State House on two bills (HD.58 and HD.3071) that would ban the illegal use of pill press machines to make counterfeit pills with dangerous drugs. One bill would impose felony penalties up to five years in prison and a fine of at least $25,000 while the committee must report by July 5.  MassLive

  • During the 8th Annual Pink in the Rink game on March 8, the Springfield Thunderbirds raised $38,300 for Rays of Hope from proceeds of a live jersey auction—team leaders Nathan Costa, Todd McDonald, and Paul Picknelly presented a check at the MassMutual Center—and the donation supports local breast cancer research and survivor care.  BusinessWest
