BUSINESS NEWS

  • Sapowsky Farms in Granby welcomed the McKinstry family as its new owners on May 1, continuing the legacy of fresh foods while former owner Tammy Sapowsky remains as the farmstand’s baker and manager. The McKinstrys plan to honor the farm’s heritage as they operate both locations.  Western Mass News
  • In Western Mass, a winning $2,500 a week for life scratch ticket was sold on Monday at the Big Y Express in Westfield, and a $100,000 prize was claimed at a Worcester Citgo station. At least 760 winning prizes statewide have been claimed, including 21 in Springfield.  MassLive

CULTURE NEWS

  • Brimfield Antique Flea Market will begin Tuesday, May 12 and run through Sunday with nearly 20 fields along Route-20 featuring both returning and new dealers offering antiques, collectibles, and onsite food options. The event promises a wide range of treasure-hunting items for local shoppers.  MassLive
  • The Springfield Symphony Chorus will perform its annual spring concert on Saturday, May 16 at 4 p.m. at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Holyoke. Tickets cost $10 cash only + benefit the Food Bank of Western Massachusetts while featuring a commissioned work in memory of Jeanne Tripp.  BusinessWest
  • The Beach Boys (a legendary band) will perform at this year’s Big E fair in West Springfield later this year, as announced by organizers. Their set is expected to bring nostalgia to festival-goers at the annual celebration.  Western Mass News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Jean Canosa Albano was named Alumna of the Year by URI’s Graduate School of Library and Information Studies for her service as assistant director at Springfield City Library. The award, announced today, honors her contributions to community outreach + leadership.  BusinessWest
  • Springfield schools will receive over $30 million in renovations beginning this summer to upgrade roofs, HVAC systems, and other facilities across more than 20 campuses. The projects are mainly funded by state reimbursements and local bonds approved last week (a significant boost for community education) to improve the learning environment.  MassLive
  • Springfield Technical Community College’s trustees voted on May 4 to recommend Jennifer Cournoyer as the next president pending approval on May 19 — she will start her tenure this summer and become the college’s first female leader.  BusinessWest

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Healey-Driscoll Administration announced $1.25M in opioid settlement grants to support prevention, treatment, and recovery services. Eighteen local groups will receive one-year awards (ranging from $5,000 to $150K) that benefit both urban and rural areas.  Western Mass News

  • UMassFive partnered with Member Advantage Mortgage and MassHousing to host an event in Hadley that explained affordable homeownership programs to 25 local attendees. The meeting detailed a down payment assistance program offering up to $25,000 (0% interest) available until July 31.  BusinessWest

  • High school baseball games ran yesterday and are set for today and later this week in the region. Today's matchups and combined contests at Dunkin' Park (Hartford) give fans a chance to watch teams like Springfield International Charter School, Westfield Tech and others extend their winning runs.  MassLive
