- ➤ Bishop William Byrne from the Springfield Diocese said he wants the next pope to be a joyful priest and a loving shepherd who preaches the gospel and cares for families. He added that the new pope should also handle church challenges like finances and child protection policies — a view that builds on Pope Francis’s work — as cardinals began their conclave on Wednesday.
