COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Downtown Springfield will host the World’s Largest Pancake Breakfast tomorrow, where organizers expect 15,000 people to join celebrations for the city's 390th birthday and the nation's 250th birthday. Main Street will close Friday morning for setup and reopen around 3 p.m. Saturday.  Western Mass News
  • Vanished Valley Brewing in Ludlow will host a fundraiser tomorrow from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. for the 15th annual Ride to Remember, a charity event honoring fallen first responders, featuring a pig roast ($20), live music, and raffles to support riders in September.  Western Mass News
  • Christina Lam will lead free outdoor Yoga on the Landing sessions at The Landing (next to MassMutual Center) on May 24, June 21, and July 19 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.; registration is requested to help manage attendance.  MassLive

CULTURE NEWS

  • Wistariahurst Museum in Holyoke will host Celebrate Juneteenth on Friday, June 19, with community activities including games, art projects, performances, and food from local vendors. The free event, sponsored by the Adams Foundation of South Hadley, honors Black history and resilience.  BusinessWest
  • A new exhibit titled 'Declaration of Innovation: Springfield’s Revolutionary Ideas' opens at the Lyman and Merrie Wood Museum of Springfield History from May 16 to Sept. 27. The display traces Springfield’s firsts through Merriam-Webster dictionaries and industrial innovations—highlighting interactive experiences for visitors.  MassLive

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Springfield Technical Community College was named a finalist in the 2026 Community College Innovation Challenge for their HydroShield project — a washing machine filter that captures microplastic fibers before they enter waterways. The team will compete in an Innovation Boot Camp in June.  BusinessWest

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Springfield’s mayor condemned the abandoned Vibra Hospital on State Street after firefighters controlled a three‑alarm fire late Thursday morning (investigators suspected local teenagers and urged property owners to secure the site) while plans for redevelopment continue.  Western Mass News

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Springfield Thunderbirds overcame a three-goal deficit to win 4-3 in overtime against the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins at Casey Plaza on Thursday night. The win evens the series and gives them home ice advantage when the series returns to Springfield on Tuesday, May 19.  MassLive
  • Tuesday night, the boys lacrosse top 10 ranking was updated after Longmeadow beat Agawam 14-2 to secure first place; Agawam dropped two spots as teams prepared for the postseason in Western Mass.  MassLive
  • Longmeadow remained top with an 18-2 win against West Springfield, while Northampton climbed the rankings after a 14-1 win over Amherst. The final season rankings included matchups on May 14 at Longmeadow (Minnechaug) and Mount Greylock (Wahconah) if weather held.  MassLive
