ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Emergency crews responded to a house fire on George St in Springfield early yesterday (around 3:30 a.m.), noting heavy smoke from the second floor and confirming that further details are pending.  Western Mass News

CRIME NEWS

  • A 14-year-old niece testified today at the retrial of Karen Read that her uncle John O'Keefe experienced frequent arguments and rising tension with Read in his final weeks — Read is accused of hitting him with her SUV after a night of drinking and leaving him to die in a snowstorm — as her account was presented to the jury.  NewsRadio 560 WHYN

CULTURE NEWS

  • Artist Nayana LaFond has her exhibit 'Portraits in RED: Missing & Murdered Indigenous Peoples Painting Project' on display at Springfield Museums through Sept. 7 to raise awareness about the crisis of violence against indigenous women. She began the project during the pandemic and will soon end public displays by returning the paintings to victims’ families.  MassLive

EDUCATION NEWS

  • In April, Springfield Public Schools lost $47 million in federal funding, but district officials said student mental health services (supported by local tax dollars) will remain untouched. High school students say these programs help them manage stress, and the district stays committed to providing support.  Western Mass News

  • The USDA issued a public health alert for chicken, bacon and ranch wraps sold ready to eat by Market32 by Price Chopper — Big Y Quick Easy Meals that came in plastic clamshell packaging of 10oz produced May 2 with a sell by date of May 7, and customers with the product may return it to Big Y for a refund.  Western Mass News
