  • The Western Massachusetts Technical Rescue Team conducted a training drill on May 2 at the Local 98 training facility in Southwick to simulate structural and disaster collapse scenarios for 68 responders from 28 departments (covering skills like concrete breaches, confined-space operations, and patient packaging).  MassLive
  • Springfield Veterans’ Services Department hosted the annual Memorial Day ceremony on Friday at Veterans Way near City Hall + a program honored fallen heroes with wreath-laying at five monuments while Mayor Sarno attended and spoke.  Western Mass News

  • Massachusetts added 8,500 payroll jobs in April with gains in construction, education, health services and professional sectors while unemployment stayed at 4.7% and labor force participation slipped to 65.6%.   • WAMC Northeast Public Radio’s Pioneer Valley Bureau is leaving the Western New England University campus after nearly 20 years as the university repurposes studio space for expanded academic programs; WAMC is in discussions with organizations about new office space.  MassLive

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A proposed Social Security rule change may cut or end benefits for (11,600) disabled SSI recipients in Massachusetts if the plan to remove SNAP protections is approved. The rule is under review and could affect local families relying on these benefits.  MassLive

SPORTS NEWS

  • Longmeadow boys volleyball swept Belchertown 3-0 in Chicopee (May 22) to win its third straight WM Class B title, and coach Pat Curry said the team worked hard despite losing key players from last season.  MassLive
  • A judge from Hampden Superior Court (Thomas Townsend) ruled Friday that Agawam High's softball team may compete in the Western Mass championship game against East Longmeadow High after a paperwork mistake cost them eligibility. The team advanced after defeating Westfield Bombers 6 to 4 in the semifinal game.  Western Mass News
  • Gateway’s baseball team finished the season 13-0 yet was left out of the WMass tournament due to computer rankings + coach Deryck Savoy urged a review of the qualification process and said the team will be motivated in the upcoming state tournament.  MassLive
