  • Ciara Speller launched the Jeffrey Speller Foundation+ in honor of her late father and to boost community support. The foundation will host its third annual golf fundraiser on Aug. 8 at Wyckoff Country Club in Holyoke to help underserved youth.  BusinessWest
  • Forest Park Zoo will host its annual Wine Safari on Saturday, May 30, featuring animal encounters, wine pairings + light bites from local culinary partners. The ticketed event is for adults only, with tickets available online in advance.  MassLive

  • BusinessWest has announced finalists for its 2026 Alumni Achievement Award to honor top achievers selected from the 40 Under Forty club. The winner will be revealed at the gala on Thursday, June 11 at the MassMutual Center (sponsored by Baystate Health/Health New England).  BusinessWest
  • Better Healthcare Solutions LLC plans to build a 3,600 sqft one-story medical office at 550 Main St. in Indian Orchard; the project will convert a long-vacant lot (bought for $140,000) into a productive use that adds jobs and revenue, pending final Conservation Commission approvals.  MassLive

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Executive director Modesto Montero-Forman has grown Libertas Academy Charter School from 90 sixth-graders in 2017 to nearly 600 students while transforming a Chestnut Street building into a permanent facility on Liberty Street that now offers a gym, cafeteria, art room, and music room. The school celebrated its first four-year college acceptances and is planning to open a second campus in Hartford by fall —28.  BusinessWest
  • ReGreen Springfield is hosting a free, hands-on iNaturalist training workshop on Saturday, May 30 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the second-floor classroom at Building 101, 1 Federal St. It will teach users to identify local species and record observations using the app + get involved in conservation.  BusinessWest

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Former state Rep. Benjamin Swan died Monday at 92 in Springfield. He served the 11th Hampden District from 2009 to 2016 and was known for his civil rights work (neighbors recall his role alongside MLK in the 1963 March on Washington).  MassLive

HEALTH NEWS

  • Baystate Health and Trinity Health Of New England have signed an agreement to merge Mercy Medical Center into the Baystate system effective Nov. 1, ensuring the community will continue to have two full-service hospitals. Leaders say the move will preserve local access to care while some remain concerned about potential cost increases.  BusinessWest
