COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A Bed For Every Child, with help from local community members and the Elks Lodge, built 20 custom wooden beds yesterday to provide new mattresses and bedding to families in need in Springfield. Donations of stuffed animals and other supplies were also collected — supporting a better night’s rest for underserved children.  Western Mass News

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • The Wilbraham Police Department said Boston Road at Railroad Ave was closed to all traffic because powerlines fell across the road, and detours (using Main Street with reverse directions) were set while crews worked to clear the hazard.  Western Mass News
  • Emergency crews battled a 3-alarm fire on Sunday morning at 26 Belcher Street in Chicopee that displaced 12 people from a three-story home with 10 units—everyone evacuated safely including the rescue of two cats—and the Red Cross is assisting as the home remains uninhabitable.  Western Mass News

CRIME NEWS

  • On Sunday morning, a one-car crash at the JFK Memorial Plaza in Holyoke involved a 26-year-old Springfield man whose car struck the memorial, leading to him and his passenger receiving Narcan and his citation; authorities plan to file charges for operating under the influence and property damage over $1,200—DPW officials have been notified.  Western Mass News
  • A Springfield man was fatally shot in Metro Center on Saturday night—at about 9:20 p.m. near Bridge Street and the intersections of Chestnut and Pearl Streets—before he died at Baystate Medical Center as police continue their investigation.  MassLive

  • Forest Park Zoo in Springfield is hosting a wine safari Saturday night that offers guests a chance to taste wines from around the globe and learn about animals from the same regions—funds raised will support care for the zoo's non-releasable animals.  Western Mass News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Springfield city officials endorsed a resolution that supports the Clean Slate Initiative — a law that will automatically seal nonviolent misdemeanor records three years and felony records seven years after conviction — while the measure, which does not include violent crimes, is under review by the legislative Joint Committee on the Judiciary.  MassLive
