- ➤ Springfield authorities have identified the victim of a deadly weekend shooting, and they continue to investigate the incident to learn more about its circumstances. Western Mass News
- ➤ The Hampden County District Attorney’s office reported that three drug trafficking investigations in Western Massachusetts led to 52 arrests, 45 firearms and over 37 kilograms of drugs being seized from operations including a wire investigation near Garcia Market that yielded 19 arrests and over 12,000 grams of cocaine, and a separate operation on Gilbert Ave that resulted in three arrests by local, state & federal agencies. - ➤ Springfield Public Schools announced on May 27 that former students who graduated with a Certificate of Attainment from 2003 through 2024—because they did not meet all MCAS requirements—can now apply for an official diploma if they passed key courses in English, math and science. The initiative follows revised competency rules that also set new graduation requirements for the class of 2025. The Reminder

- ➤ State Representative Orlando Ramos introduced a bill in Springfield to install visible red-light cameras with clear warning signs that automatically fine drivers for running red lights in an effort to protect drivers and pedestrians. The proposal allows cities or towns to decide whether to opt in + it aims to reduce dangerous accidents caused by distracted driving. Western Mass News
- ➤ Four lawmakers criticized the closure of the SBA office on 1 Federal St. on June 1 as a move that leaves local small businesses without local help — they sent a letter on May 28 urging SBA Administrator Kelly Loeffler to reverse the decision. The Reminder
- ➤ Springfield City Council approved Mayor Domenic Sarno’s $985.7 million fiscal year 2026 budget on May 27 with no layoffs or service cuts—vote was 10—1. The new budget raises spending for city and school services, uses $2 million from reserve funds to offset rising pension costs, and will start on July 1. The Reminder
- ➤ The Springfield City Council voted unanimously to appeal a court decision that reinstated nearly 14-year-old permits for a 35-megawatt biomass power plant in East Springfield. The council will take the case to the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court as it works to stop the plant from harming community air quality — a dispute that has lasted 14 years. The Reminder
