ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Fire crews responded to a house fire on Dawes Street in Springfield around 3 p.m. Wednesday at a multi-family home near American International College as the blaze damaged the second and third floors, more than two dozen first responders and eight fire trucks worked to knock it down, and investigators began checking for its cause with no injuries reported.  Western Mass News
  • Madisen Taylor, a lively 26-year-old who loved gardening and singing, died when her car struck a motorcycle in Agawam on May 24—firefighters took her to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield where she later died—and her family remembers her warm nature.  MassLive

  • A Blackjack player at MGM Springfield won a jackpot of $65,107.18 on Monday after getting a Royal Flush. The win follows high jackpot payouts at the casino—which offers five table games for players aged 21 and older.  MassLive
  • Living Local 413 launched the new BIZ BUZZ 413 podcast to boost local business and community engagement across Western Mass—hosted by entrepreneur Jill Monson, the four-part pilot episode explores how Main Streets drive each county's economy.   • Yesterday marked 13 years since Springfield Police Officer Kevin Ambrose was fatally shot while protecting a woman and her child from her boyfriend—each year the community honors his nearly 36 years of service with a charity golf tournament and a Ride to Remember that raise funds for children's programs and public safety.  Western Mass News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • In Springfield, former students who did not pass MCAS but met core course requirements are now eligible to request high school diplomas after a November vote changed graduation rules. The program requires passing grades in English 9 and 10, Algebra 1 or 2, Geometry and one laboratory core science—students missing these credits can complete coursework at Springfield Success Academy.  Western Mass News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City officials announced that the city will propose new rules to ban the sale of synthetic marijuana in convenience stores and gas stations, and a $300 fine will be set for each product found—this step is meant to help keep children safe. The proposal now goes to City Council for debate—aiming to curb unfair competition with legal marijuana retailers.  MassLive
