  • Springfield is preparing for a busy weekend with a Pride parade & block party on Saturday, an Ironman triathlon on Sunday, multiple graduations, a convention and restaurant week drawing tens of thousands downtown. Officials say a new 817-space parking garage near the MassMutual Center and coordinated road closures & extra safety measures will ease parking and traffic.  MassLive

  • BusinessWest announced the finalists for the 2025 Alumni Achievement Award, a program that honors 40 Under Forty Club members who have advanced in their careers and supported the community.   • The Worthington Street area is changing as developer Raipher Pellegrino, with city support, renovates the historic Underwood Building into restaurants, a music venue and homes—part of plans to bring new energy to the local entertainment district. CRIME NEWS

  • Springfield police arrested 62-year-old Victor Velasquez after an hours-long standoff at an apartment on the 0–100 block of Byers Street that began with a domestic disturbance and attempted arson before he barricaded himself, returned with a knife, and later overdosed when officers and crisis teams arrived.  Western Mass News
  • Three Springfield residents were arrested on Wednesday in a weeks-long investigation targeting drug trafficking from a Canon Circle apartment—police seized more than 20 grams of cocaine, 32 grams of heroin, ammunition, three loaded guns, and nearly $25,000 in cash while charging the suspects with drug and gun offenses.  Western Mass News

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The Ironman 70.3 Western Massachusetts race will be held on Sunday in Springfield and is expected to boost local business by $2M as nearly 1,400 athletes and more than 820 volunteers support the event. The race will start at about 6 a.m. at the Pioneer Valley Riverfront Club — featuring a 1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike ride and 13.1 mile run along the Connecticut River — and will bring many visitors downtown.  MassLive

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Springfield WORKS launched the Cliff Effect Program to help low-wage workers keep their benefits when they are promoted — the program gives extra funds, job coaching and a $10,000 asset building payment, has raised $2.6 million and is working to raise another $2.6 million so up to 100 people can move toward financial independence.  MassLive
  • Springfield officials announced a new ordinance that bans the sale, manufacture and distribution of synthetic cannabis products marketed like candy—dubbed Gas Station Weed—that endangers youth; violators will be fined $300 per offense and may have a lien placed on their property if the fine is not paid.  NewsRadio 560 WHYN
