  • Springfield, Greenfield and Pittsfield are celebrating Pride Month with parades and events this weekend. Springfield officials and community members raised a Pride flag at city hall as they prepare for the 4th annual Springfield Pride Parade scheduled for today — local groups will also host events to support queer youth.  New England Public Media

  • Springfield man Kaysone Walters, 37, was sentenced by a Hampden County judge to life in prison without parole—he will also serve 18 to 20 years concurrently for an armed carjacking tied to the August 2021 murder of 25-year-old Bri Boiselle, whose body was found on Baldwin Street with 56 stab wounds.  MassLive

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Van Sickle Middle School students learned golf basics last Tuesday at the newly renovated Franconia Golf Course under PGA pro Steven Carle’s guidance. The four-week program is sponsored by Springfield Parks and Recreation Department and Springfield Public Schools to give inner-city students exposure to the sport — a potential step toward future involvement.  MassLive

  • Juan F. Latorre III will launch his campaign for an at-large seat on Springfield City Council next week at Ciro’s Restaurant — 904 Main St from 5 to 7 p.m. He said if elected he will focus on economic development, job creation, better school funding, environmental protection, and quality of life improvements while building on two decades of community service from his previous runs in 2021 and 2023.  MassLive

HEALTH NEWS

  • Springfield College Occupational Therapy Department will host the CarFit event at The Cedars Banquet Hall Parking Lot, 375 Island Pond Road on June 11 (9 a.m. to noon) to help older drivers adjust their seating and mirrors for improved comfort and safety. Faculty, students, and licensed occupational therapists have partnered with local civic associations to share advice on driving health and nearby community resources.  MassLive

  • Downtown Springfield is preparing for the Ironman 70.3 race this weekend as over 1,400 athletes will compete and thousands are expected to join, with local vendors ready to serve crowds and drive nearly $2 million in revenue on Sunday—city officials have set road closures along key streets for event set-up.  Western Mass News
