  • A player placed a $100 bet at MGM Springfield on Wednesday morning and won a $13,360 jackpot on the Super Flaming Hot Pots slot machine. The win is one of many large payouts the casino has made recently—showing that players have a chance for big wins.  MassLive

CRIME NEWS

  • William Hernando Usma Acosta, who lived under an alias for nearly 30 years after being accused of a 1994 murder in Colombia, was deported from Massachusetts days before the statute of limitations expired—ending his evasion of justice.  MassLive
  • Springfield police reported that victims lost over $624,000 in bitcoin scams since January 2024, and more than $1 million in total from scams; fraudsters posing as law enforcement are urging people to use bitcoin ATMs — a tactic police warn everyone to avoid — as authorities continue their investigation.  The Reminder
  • Springfield Police are searching for a missing man who was reported on June 11 and are working to determine his last known whereabouts—officials have not released additional details.  Western Mass News
  • Police said an ATV rider crashed his vehicle into a police cruiser on June 11 and was arrested—investigators are reviewing the incident.  Western Mass News

  • Bay Meadow Apartments in Springfield became the first site to get high-speed internet from the state's Residential Retrofit Program on June 2—POAH will cover the cost for five years. The upgrade gives all 148 units a fast, dedicated network and a digital literacy program to help residents learn skills like using email and telehealth.  The Reminder
