EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Springfield’s Glickman School in the Sixteen Acres neighborhood will get a $5M HVAC upgrade as part of a state grant program to improve ventilation in nearly a dozen older schools—this work will help create better learning conditions for students, teachers, and staff while the state funds about 80% of the cost. - ➤ City officials announced that Camp Wilder Beach on Parker Street in Springfield remains closed after water tests found high bacteria levels. Officials will retest the water on Monday — the beach may reopen if it meets safety standards. Western Mass News
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ State public safety officials warned Springfield residents not to use illegal do-it-yourself fireworks because they have caused over 550 fires and explosions in the past five years — injuring firefighters and causing $1 million in damage. The Springfield Fire Commissioner said those who use them risk fines and confiscation and noted that a safe, professional display was held on July 4. New England Public Media
- ➤ Incumbent Mayor William C. Reichelt is running for a third term in West Springfield—he says taking risks and embracing change are key to progress. Town Councilor Daniel M. O’Brien is challenging him by questioning past spending and misplaced priorities. MassLive
- ➤ The Massachusetts Attorney General’s Office cited Northborough firm Franca Service, Inc. and its president David Franca for state law violations, including misclassifying 101 workers, failing to pay overtime, lacking an earned sick time policy+ keeping inaccurate payroll records. The citations totaled nearly $750,000 in civil penalties and restitution for affected employees after a complaint from a local union prompted the investigation. MassLive
