  • A Massachusetts casino player won $15,756 at MGM Springfield on Sunday after a $250 bet (jackpot win) on the game (Ultimate Fire Link Ultra Bank).  MassLive

CRIME NEWS

  • A double shooting in a Forest Park apartment on Orange Street around 10:30 p.m. Friday left one man fatally wounded—he died on Sunday—while another is recovering from non-life-threatening injuries, police said.  MassLive
  • A man died after a shooting on Main Street in Springfield late Saturday night — police reported that the incident is under investigation.  Western Mass News
  • A 37-year-old Connecticut man, Anthony Kaponis, was arrested in Springfield after driving to report his stolen car and firing a shot near Warriner Avenue as police followed up on the incident—authorities seized his out-of-state gun and charged him with multiple firearm offenses while a 16-year-old was treated for a non-life-threatening gunshot wound.  Western Mass News

  • After more than two decades, the Our Lady of Mount Carmel Italian Feast returned to the streets with traditional Italian food, live music, family-friendly games, and the famous grease pole competition—Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno served as master of ceremonies as organizers aim to keep the event old school.  Western Mass News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor Maura Healey signed the state’s annual budget on July 14 and added a $130 million supplemental spending plan that includes $30 million for housing safety net programs plus she vetoed $27 million in items aimed at limiting coverage for GLP-1 weight loss drugs. The plan gives her new authority to cut spending from anywhere in the budget if revenues fall $400 million short of projections.  New England Public Media
  • Today, Springfield reopens its cooling centers to help residents beat the summer heat. They will be open Tuesday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. — the Forest Park library is open from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. and may extend its hours through Friday if the weather stays hot.  Western Mass News
