  • On Wednesday, a ceremony was held at East Forest Park to honor Gunnery Sergeant Thomas Sullivan, a Springfield Marine who lost his life protecting others during a Tennessee terror attack ten years ago. Family, local officials, and fellow Marines gathered to remember his service—flag folding and wreath laying marked the tribute—and to celebrate his lasting legacy.  Western Mass News
  • Hundreds gathered Wednesday at the Gunnery Sgt. Thomas J. Sullivan Memorial Park on South Branch Parkway in Springfield to mark the 10-year anniversary of the Marine’s death in a terror attack in Chattanooga on July 16 — he bravely rushed amid gunfire to try to save lives.  MassLive
  • The Springfield City Library invites residents to complete a short 10-minute survey to help shape its next plan for services and spaces. The survey is available online and on paper in English, Spanish, Haitian Creole, and Swahili— the library aims to collect at least 2,000 responses to guide future changes.  BusinessWest

CRIME NEWS

  • Crews continued to search the Connecticut River for 26-year-old Daniel Callahan, whose car was found partially underwater in March after he left a party in Chicopee, and his mother said she remained hopeful even though Wednesday’s dive did not locate him—authorities plan to keep searching.  Western Mass News
  • On Wednesday, July 16, Springfield police found a woman with a gunshot wound on the 600 block of Parker Street and took her to Baystate for serious treatment — Detective Captain Trent Duda is leading the investigation.  Western Mass News
  • Police responded to an apartment on Orange Street around 10:30 p.m. Friday when two men were shot—authorities later identified Eric Wilson, 54, from Springfield, who died from his injuries on Sunday while the other victim was expected to recover.  Western Mass News

  • The Healey-Driscoll Administration announced over $1 million in grants to Massachusetts farms from two state programs to buy new equipment and build storage facilities — aiming to boost the local agricultural economy.  Western Mass News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Springfield Public Schools announced Wednesday that the Springfield Promise Program is awarding $100,000 in scholarships to 2025 seniors+ the awards come through its Last Dollar Scholarship. Eligible students will receive between $500 and $2,500 based on financial need+ the program is in its fifteenth year.  Western Mass News
