COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Dozens of Springfield kids attended the third annual Red Sox Foundation Youth Clinic yesterday at American International College where players and coaches taught baseball skills in scorching hot weather. Square One Springfield partnered with the Boys & Girls Club and other groups to run drills like base running and a home run derby— and the children also enjoyed a surprise visit from Wally the Green Monster.  Western Mass News

  • Local retailers are gearing up for a weekend with no sales tax on purchases under $2,500 set for August 9 and 10 that is expected to draw many shoppers. Store owners report heavy demand for bedding and furniture—inventory remains ample—and customers may preorder to ensure their items are available.  Western Mass News
  • Mamou Restaurant is back open on Worthington St after closing during the pandemic, and new owners and chefs Ivan Felix and Jose G. Correa have taken over from original owner Wayne Hooker — reintroducing classic Cajun dishes with fresh twists. The restaurant now serves meals on a daily schedule and has received strong local support.  The Reminder

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Western New England University is updating its campus parking signs to show respect by replacing 'Handicapped Parking' with 'Reserved' and using a moving wheelchair icon. Occupational therapy students and associate professor Erin Murray began the changes last year—modernizing the displays for a more inclusive message.  Western Mass News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Springfield City Council approved several grants on July 14, including a $2.2 million award for the Safe and Successful Youth Initiative that helps high-risk young adults with education, job training, and health services – the program will run through fiscal year 2028. The council also approved a $934,419 grant for youth homelessness, a $1.1 million grant for the emergency communications center, and a $1.2 million grant to reimburse SPD costs for overtime, education, and uniforms.  The Reminder
  • Mayor Reichelt met with union representatives in West Springfield to address safety concerns at the Memorial Avenue railroad crossing where workers have long warned of risks when transferring propane. He said rail work will begin this fall plus updated signals will be installed next year.  Western Mass News
  • At Large Councilor Delgado is urging Springfield to launch a request for proposals process that invites competition for a citywide high-speed fiber network — a key step to avoid a monopoly by any single company — as he works with the Pioneer Valley Planning Commission on a digital equity report.  The Reminder

HEALTH NEWS

  • A Springfield mother started a GoFundMe in January to raise $7,000 for a princess headstone honoring her 6-year-old daughter who died within 12 hours in November 2024 from complications of E. coli, which led to fatal brain damage. The mother hopes to raise awareness about E. coli signs & encourage early treatment to prevent future tragedies.  MassLive
