ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A moped rider died after a crash with a pickup truck in Springfield on Sunday evening when police responded near Allen Street and Ramblewood Drive at 8 p.m.—the rider was taken to Baystate Medical Center where he died of his injuries.  MassLive

CULTURE NEWS

  • A red carpet screening for A&E's Family Lockup was held Monday night at the Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, with Sheriff Nick Cocchi and two co-producers in attendance to highlight the docuseries that follows 10 families and inmates as they rebuild relationships amid incarceration.  Western Mass News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Monday marked the first day of school for Springfield Public Schools where Superintendent Dr. Sonia Dinnall said teachers began the year with focused training in early literacy, middle school transformation, and plans to boost college and career readiness. She added that staff received new grade-level strategies and that students will soon benefit from guidance on freshman orientation, financial aid steps and course selections + ongoing community support.  Western Mass News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Monday the Healey administration announced it secured $3.5 million in federal funding for the Boston-Albany Corridor Service Development Plan to expand train service connecting Boston and Albany through Springfield—several lawmakers including Senator Ed Markey praised the effort.  Western Mass News
  • Springfield has increased police presence at Union Station to keep students and commuters safe as violent incidents and drug arrests raised concerns. Officials say the new partnership with the Hampden County Sheriff's Department will reduce crime—steps may last through the back-to-school season.  Western Mass News
  • On Monday, the Healey administration announced another $3.5 million in federal funding for the west-east rail—supporting plans to improve rail service across the region.  Western Mass News
