- ➤ U.S. Rep. Richard Neal celebrated Social Security’s 90th anniversary at the local Social Security Administration office (Bond Street) in Springfield and said it is one of America's key achievements. He noted that staffing cuts have led to longer wait times and that Congress is planning changes to help maintain full benefits for future seniors. The Reminder
- ➤ City councilors Tracye Whitfield and Malo Brown met on August 20th to ask city departments and the Water and Sewer Commission about extra fees on accessory dwelling units after a developer complained about charges for new piping. The commission said that new units need independent services, a process handled by contractors — and councilors seek to ensure fees remain fair for local developers. The Reminder
- ➤ City and state leaders cut the ribbon on a new multi-use plaza at the Springfield Convention Center Carpark, which now has a parking area + shopping hub called The Landing. The $58 million project is expected to improve parking and boost business downtown. Western Mass News
- ➤ Springfield announced that repairs will be planned for West Street Bridge after it closed on Aug. 17 due to a bump from an expansion joint issue — the city conducted an underside inspection on Aug. 25 and will submit repair plans to MassDOT, with work expected to finish in two to three months. This measure comes as efforts continue to address structural concerns and ensure safe travel between Springfield and Ludlow. The Reminder
