COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Parish Cupboard will hold its third pickleball FUNdariser event on Sept. 13 at the pickleball/tennis center in Mittineague Park, starting at 8:30 a.m., with a rain date set for Sept. 14 at noon. The event, which accepts players with a donation fee and awards medals and a raffle, will raise funds to buy food for families in West Springfield, Agawam, and Feeding Hills—helping serve more people in need.  The Reminder

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Hampden Charter School of Science was named the top public high school in the Springfield metro area by U.S. News and World Report. The school scored 93.3 points, ranked 52nd statewide and had a 95 percent graduation rate — officials said the score shows strong work — while 86 percent of students took advanced courses.  BusinessWest

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Springfield Police Department and Hampden County Sheriff’s office are launching a new Safe Travels Initiative Task Force to increase police presence at Union Station to help travelers feel safe — they will work with tenants, the facility manager and other partners to patrol key areas during the station’s busiest hours.  The Reminder
  • City Councilor Sean Curran proposed creating a Re-Store Springfield department to help small business owners improve signage and facades across the city—he said the new unit would guide businesses on available grants and design support. Mayor Domenic Sarno has forwarded the recommendation to the Chief Development Officer for review.  The Reminder
  • Holyoke and Chicopee will hold preliminary elections on Tuesday, Sept. 16 — in Chicopee, three new candidates will run for a city collector seat as the current official does not seek reelection, and in Holyoke, preliminary contests in Ward 1 City Council and Ward 5 School Committee will determine the top two candidates advancing to the municipal election on Nov. 4.  The Reminder
  • The Massachusetts Seal, Flag, and Motto Advisory Commission is asking for public input on three new flag options chosen from thousands of submissions to replace symbols seen as disrespectful to Native Americans — public hearings will take place in September and October with a final suggestion expected by Dec. 15.  MassLive
  • On Aug. 27, Focus Springfield hosted a Meet the Candidates event at Tower Square Park where candidates for Ward 4 City Council, Ward 6 City Council and the District 3 School Committee answered one-minute questions from residents ahead of the Sept. 9 primary. The candidates addressed issues such as leadership, affordable housing, public safety and education — topics that will shape Springfield’s future.  The Reminder

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Massachusetts Department of Public Health announced Tuesday the season’s first human case of West Nile Virus in a woman in her 70s who was exposed in Middlesex County. Officials said the risk remains moderate in all four western Massachusetts counties—residents are urged to remove standing water and use protection outdoors.  Western Mass News
