  • On Sep. 7, the Hampden County Sheriff’s Office held its annual Sheriff’s Shuffle 5K Run at Ashley Reservoir — runners began at Elk’s Lodge and took a one and a half mile walk to raise funds for domestic violence survivors.  Western Mass News

CRIME NEWS

  • Jared Dewberry, a 27-year-old from Agawam, was sentenced to 18 to 20 years for manslaughter and an extra three to five years for illegal gun possession after pleading guilty to fatally shooting 25-year-old Gary White in Springfield—White's family attended the sentencing.  MassLive
  • A routine well-being check in West Springfield on Sept. 3 at 6:40 p.m. led police to arrest two men after officers found crack cocaine, fentanyl, and a loaded handgun in a business parking lot on Riverdale St.—The suspects from Victory and Hartford now face charges for trafficking and firearm violations.  MassLive

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Three years ago the West Springfield School District opened three preschool classrooms and quickly filled them, and Mayor William Reichelt said on Facebook that the district expanded the program — adding classrooms without raising costs to meet high demand.  MassLive

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Four candidates are running for the Ward 4 city council seat in Springfield, with incumbent Malo Brown and challengers Willie Naylor, Kenneth Barnett and Beverly Savage in a highly contested preliminary race. Voters tomorrow in the Mason Square and McKnight neighborhoods will narrow the field to two candidates—setting the stage for the November election.  MassLive
  • Three candidates, including a three-term incumbent and two newcomers, are running for City Council in Ward 6 and promise to keep tax rates steady, boost affordable housing, and clean up neighborhoods. Voters will cast ballots on Tuesday to reduce the field from three to two — the contest pits new faces against a veteran.  MassLive

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • A Springfield home at 284 Denver St remains stuck in court because inspectors deemed it unfit for living due to pet hoarding, a garbage-filled interior, and hazards—such as a fuel tank wedged at the basement stairs and electric issues. Owner Rebecca Hayward purchased the house sight unseen in 2024, and one inspector became infested with fleas during his visit and now refuses to return.  MassLive

SPORTS NEWS

  • Local children honed their basketball skills at a junior NBA clinic held at the Basketball Hall of Fame on Saturday as special coaches taught fundamentals like dribbling and defense— showing the importance of teamwork and individual growth.  Western Mass News
  • On Saturday, five inductees including Carmelo Anthony, Dwight Howard, Sue Bird, Maya Moore and Sylvia Fowles were inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield; they have earned many championships and Olympic gold medals. The ceremony marked the first time three WNBA players were honored in the Hall of Fame—celebrating long basketball careers and significant contributions to the sport.  Western Mass News
