EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Springfield School Committee voted 5-1 on Sept. 4 to update competency determination requirements for the class of 2026 and 2027—these new benchmarks, set by DESE, require coursework in English, math and science and offer remediation options for those who fall short. ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Springfield residents and city council committee members are drafting an Urban Woodlands Ordinance that will protect micro forests through permits and a revolving tree fund — measures aimed at preserving mature wooded lots and cooling the city. The draft ordinance follows concerns over a solar installation project that removed a mature forest and will be discussed in upcoming subcommittee meetings with developers.  The Reminder

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Massachusetts state officials will break ties with federal immunization policies to ensure COVID-19 booster shots remain available at retail pharmacies — insurers must now cover these vaccines. The funds were meant to support projects such as a community solar project, home upgrades and tree planting—initiatives designed to reduce health risks, and the city is planning an appeal.  The Reminder
  • Mass. Gov. Maura Healey said that Boston immigration enforcement detained everyday workers and was a political power grab rather than a step to improve public safety—stressing that local families suffered from these actions.  MassLive
