CRIME NEWS

  • A Springfield man, Joshua Middleton, 44, was arrested on Sept. 4 after he allegedly brought juveniles to Target on Buckland Hills Drive in South Windsor to steal merchandise — he was charged with risk of injury to a minor, turned himself in, and was released on a $10,000 non-surety bond with a court appearance set for Sept. 24.  Western Mass News
  • Two Springfield men were arrested on Monday after allegedly stealing a car from Enfield and ramming it into several police cruisers on Garfield Street—19-year-old Awad Anter now faces multiple motor vehicle charges while details about the other suspect remain undisclosed.  Western Mass News
  • A wanted 19-year-old Springfield man was arrested on gun and drug trafficking charges after a months-long investigation — police said.  Western Mass News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Nine Massachusetts college presidents joined forces to oppose a federal lawsuit that aimed to dismantle the Hispanic Serving Institution program—an initiative that provides over $400 million yearly in funding for Hispanic student support. They urged state and national leaders to defend the program, warning that its removal could widen the education gap for Hispanic students.  MassLive

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Two UMass Amherst professors joined 42 climate scientists in a paper published Tuesday that warns geoengineering proposals—such as blocking sunlight with airborne particles—could have unintended effects on Massachusetts solar power and agriculture while urging a focus on proven clean energy methods.  MassLive
  • Yesterday, Massachusetts environmental affairs secretary declared that 10 counties—including Hampden—face Level 2 drought after receiving only 40-80% of normal rainfall, while Norfolk, Bristol and Plymouth counties experienced milder conditions and Dukes County remained normal. Residents are urged to conserve water by following local restrictions and fixing leaks.  MassLive

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • West Springfield revealed final design plans for a full reconstruction of Main Street during a public meeting on Aug 27 and officials noted damage to sidewalks and unsafe crossings. The project will add raised pedestrian crossings, updated drainage, and speed humps—planned to begin next spring and wrap up by July.  The Reminder

HEALTH NEWS

  • Students from Springfield International Charter School attended a mental health first aid training at Western New England University on Tuesday as part of a nationally recognized program that teaches them to spot and respond to mental health and substance use signs—Karen Carreria explained that ARPA funds are set to support future trainings in Springfield.  Western Mass News
