COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Agawam held a ceremony on Thursday to remember nearly 3,000 lives lost in the September 11 terrorist attack—first responders, officials, and community members gathered outside the fire headquarters to honor those lost 24 years ago.  Western Mass News
  • The Big E fair opens today in West Springfield for a 17-day run that is expected to draw over a million visitors and boost local business—local vendors will offer new sweet and savory treats including creative items like a mocktail and chicken nugget shaped ice cream. Organizers also plan to celebrate the region's agriculture and small business spirit throughout the event.  New England Public Media
  • Communities in Holyoke, Easthampton, and Ludlow held ceremonies on Thursday to honor those lost in the 9/11 attacks—Holyoke marked the day near its fire department headquarters while Easthampton and Ludlow hosted events at their public safety complexes with officials present.  Western Mass News
  • The Harold Grinspoon Charitable Foundation started a 12‐week program this summer to support local farms by buying fresh vegetables for office staff every Tuesday. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Springfield recently celebrated the opening of the new Convention Center Carpark and the Landing—city and state leaders praised the project as a boost for downtown business and community gatherings. The 350,000-square-foot garage has more than 800 parking spots and electric vehicle chargers and replaces an old structure that was torn down in 2022.  BusinessWest
  • A MassINC poll of 1,000 respondents showed Governor Maura Healey has a 55 percent approval rating—33 percent disapproved and 11 percent were unsure. She will run for a second term next year.  NewsRadio 560 WHYN

HEALTH NEWS

  • Gina Marie Bakery in Waterbury initiated a recall of six cookie varieties sold in 1-pound and 2-pound packages at local stores including Springfield's Big Y— the products contain undeclared allergens and dyes that could pose a serious health risk, and customers are advised to return them for a full refund.  MassLive
  • BusinessWest and Healthcare News will honor our region's healthcare leaders in the 2025 Healthcare Heroes program, which began in 2017— the event will be held on Oct.22 at the Log Cabin in Holyoke. Tickets cost $95 and tables of 10 are available to celebrate these local contributions to health.  BusinessWest
  • The USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service issued a public health alert after a retailer discovered that Bianco & Sons beef tips had a misprinted label originally meant for Garlic and Ginger Sirloin Beef Tips, which left sesame and wheat allergens undeclared on packages produced on September 2 and sold exclusively at Roche Bros. Supermarkets; consumers who find these items in their freezers are advised to discard or return them.  MassLive
