COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Big E finished its first full weekend and officials will share total attendance numbers after the 17-day fair. Visitors said the new fairground layout led to smaller crowds on Monday — and the fair is promoting weekday fun with bargain bites and live music.  Western Mass News
  • Ann Poliak, a lifelong Springfield resident and the first woman to graduate from Boston University’s engineering program, celebrated her 90th birthday Monday—her milestone honored by Mayor Domenic Sarno who declared the day Ann Poliak Day in recognition of her contributions to the city.  Western Mass News

CULTURE NEWS

  • La Placita, a pop-up restaurant at MGM Springfield's South End Market, opened Monday, September 15 to honor Hispanic Heritage Month by serving authentic Puerto Rican street food like tripleta sandwiches and pineapple rum cake—its menu will run until October 15.  Western Mass News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Monday, the City of Firsts held a naturalization ceremony at Western New England University School of Law where 51 new citizens from 31 countries took the U.S. oath—presided over by a judge who praised the group's diversity. Participants celebrated with cake and received help with voter registration.  Western Mass News

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Center for Human Development hosted its 21st annual golf tournament at Twin Hills Country Club in Longmeadow on Monday to raise funds for Cancer House for Hope, which supports people fighting cancer—last year’s event raised over $100,000. The tournament is the organization’s largest fundraising event of the year.  Western Mass News

SPORTS NEWS

  • John Cena, a Springfield College graduate and famous WWE star, returned to Springfield Monday for a hometown reunion at the MassMutual center during Monday Night RAW. Coach Mike Cerasuolo said Cena’s legacy continues to inspire local fans and students—his influence is still felt among those who remember his college days.  Western Mass News
