COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Volunteers from local tree companies—many with personal ties—worked on Wednesday at the Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Agawam to secure and beautify the resting places for veterans. The work was part of the 11th annual Day of Service for Properties Honoring Veterans, with more than 4,500 participants nationwide helping with tasks such as pruning, planting and hazard tree removal.  Western Mass News

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A house fire on September 17th in Springfield displaced 14 residents — emergency crews worked to contain the blaze and assist those affected.  Western Mass News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Many people gathered at The Big E fairgrounds on Wednesday to celebrate Connecticut Day with local bands and food from Frank Pepe’s Pizzeria—traffic was heavy and visitors were advised to plan ahead.  Western Mass News

  • Holyoke Mall is hosting its ‘Get Hired’ job fair today from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.—employers from local industries including Holyoke and Springfield Public Schools, Florence and Westfield Banks, and Baystate Health will attend.  Western Mass News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The free community college program now cuts need-based stipends by $200 for books and living costs — college leaders say the change will hurt low-income students and may slow the recent rise in enrollment.  MassLive

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Springfield is accepting nominations for the 2025 Veteran of the Year award with applications due by Oct. 31; the award winner will be announced on Nov. 3 and will march in the Nov. 11 Veterans Day Parade — a key role in the city's celebrations.  MassLive
  • Springfield City Council unanimously approved a law change that will boost penalties for drug dealing near parks and schools—Councilors Brian Santaniello and Lavar Click-Bruce said the move comes after a child was injured by a discarded needle at Johnny Appleseed Park, and the Parks Department already works daily to remove such hazards.  MassLive
  • The U.S. Navy will showcase its Strike Group—an immersive mixed-reality experience at The Big E this weekend. Visitors will soon feel the cockpit experience of a Navy aircraft and see interactive displays of jets, ships and technology.  MassLive

HEALTH NEWS

  • Massachusetts public health officials recommended that everyone six months and older get a COVID-19 vaccine, with high-risk groups such as seniors, healthcare workers, and people with weakened immune systems urged to vaccinate and healthy adults and most children allowed to choose (the guidelines were released yesterday). State actions to boost vaccine access include measures like pharmacy vaccination orders (which let pharmacists vaccinate residents aged 5 and older) and insurance coverage for the recommended shots.  MassLive
  • BusinessWest and Healthcare News have announced the Healthcare Heroes 2025 class, and an awards gala will be held on Oct. 22 from 5:30 to 9 p.m. at the Log Cabin in Holyoke—tickets cost $95 per person and tables of 10 are available.  BusinessWest

SPORTS NEWS

  • WWE star John Cena delivered a heartfelt salute to his Western Mass roots on Monday at MassMutual Center, telling Springfield fans that his time at Springfield College laid the foundation for his career—he will face Brock Lesnar this weekend as part of his farewell tour. Cena, who plans to retire at the end of the year, highlighted local ties during his final in-ring appearances.  MassLive
