COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A local shelter in Springfield is working to find homes for 26 golden retrievers rescued from a backyard breeding facility. Twenty-three of the dogs are puppies that were kept in unsanitary conditions—each has now received treatment and is ready for adoption.  Western Mass News
  • The Salvation Army and local studios on Liberty Street invite residents to donate gently used kids jackets, hats, scarves and gloves starting October 1—donations are accepted on weekdays between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.—to help collect coats for kids.  Western Mass News
  • Nathan Bills in Springfield organized the first ever ‘Strides for Sean’ 5k and two-mile walk on Sunday to benefit Massachusetts State Trooper Sean Clark—a former Springfield police officer who was hit by a car during a June traffic stop. Clark said he was very grateful for the community support as he continues on his road to recovery.  Western Mass News
  • The Young Professional Society of Greater Springfield announced that the Up Next Summit will take place on Oct. 16 at MGM Springfield—designed to empower and connect rising professionals through workshops, keynotes, and networking; tickets are now on sale and companies may still partner with the event.  BusinessWest

  • Rocky's Ace Hardware in Springfield is hosting its annual Round Up for Pets fundraiser until Oct. 5 to support local animal shelters — including Thomas J. O’Connor Animal Control & Adoption Center and Dakin Humane Society. Customers can round up their purchase totals to help support animals in need.  BusinessWest

  • As summer heat grows deadlier, energy experts advise Massachusetts households to check state utility laws and protect those aged 65 or facing financial hardship—resources include the Department of Public Utilities website and LIHEAP guidance.  MassLive

  • Polish National Credit Union named Michael Sugrue as its new president, effective Sept. 17, after serving as executive vice president. The credit union also promoted Charlotte Hansen to CFO and Kirk Burnham to executive vice president of Operations—both with decades of experience—to lead its team.  BusinessWest

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • At The Big E fairgrounds, 15 new sailors were sworn in as the fair began its final week and they pledged to defend the country. The recruits will soon head to boot camp for Navy training—launching Connecticut River Valley Navy Week that honors veterans.  Western Mass News
  • Local developers propose a new courthouse at Chestnut and Lyman Streets that, if approved by the state, will require demolishing five downtown buildings—including two historic ones—and is expected to create jobs and reduce crime. The project proposal is due in 23 days and will enter a long-term lease with the Massachusetts Court System if selected.  Western Mass News
  • The Massachusetts Senate passed three bills that will expand access to fentanyl testing to help curb opioid overdoses, add safety for people with developmental disabilities, and lower car rental costs by changing insurance rules. The bills now move to the House for review — a step aimed at closing gaps in the law for local residents.  BusinessWest
  • West Springfield has implemented level two water restrictions because of the ongoing drought in the Connecticut River Valley — residents are banned from using outdoor water for tasks like watering lawns and washing vehicles for non-commercial use.   • A recent report from the Massachusetts Budget and Policy Center warned that low-tax sports betting may cannibalize stagnant casino revenue as lawmakers consider a bill to legalize online gaming and an online lottery expecting over $70 million in net profit next year. State officials also moved ahead with a $5.16 billion housing plan to ease the crunch while the House approved a $234 million package to help hospitals—one dissenting vote showing ongoing debate.  New England Public Media
