- ➤ A new welcome center for refugees has opened in West Springfield where the Welcoming Alliance for Refugee Ministry (WARM) provides housing, English classes and health care for almost 100 families from Afghanistan, Syria and Iraq. - ➤ The Springfield Symphony Orchestra will open its 2025—26 season on Oct. 11 with 'A Night in Italy' at Springfield Symphony Hall, featuring music from The Godfather, a performance with youth orchestra members, a classical conversation with guest conductor Mei-Ann Chen, and an Italian-themed pre-concert reception with treats, wine, and a charcuterie board hosted by the Italian Cultural Center. - ➤ UMass Amherst will start a new plan to boost the local and state economy by creating jobs, building affordable housing, and expanding ties with businesses and government—officials will work with community groups and use new tests to track progress. - ➤ A Realtor.com analysis found that only 10 states let retirees live solely on Social Security benefits, with Delaware, Indiana and Arizona showing a surplus while many states face a shortfall. Retirees in Massachusetts face a yearly deficit of $7,345—mainly from higher housing costs. MassLive

- ➤ Nurses at Cooley Dickinson Hospital will hold a strike-authorization vote on October 9th as the Massachusetts Nurses Association reports concerns about unsafe conditions, low wages, and rising health insurance costs—if approved, the vote could lead to a one-day work stoppage.
