COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The final 'Ride Like an Animal' motorcycle run for the Foundation for TJO Animals raised over $20,000 to help animals at the Thomas J. O’Connor Animal Control and Adoption Center in Springfield—more than 150 riders enjoyed live music, a barbecue, raffles and games. BUSINESS NEWS

  • Four local chefs will compete over the next four Thursdays at 174 Main Street in Indian Orchard as part of a cook-off hosted by the Latino Economic Development Corp where visitors can sample free dishes and rate the future restaurant's theme. The contest will award $10,000 in cash and one year of free rent at the remodeled diner — an investment supported by $100,000 in funding.  Western Mass News

  • Springfield’s Bishop Talbert Swan II, senior pastor of Spring of Hope Church of God in Christ and president of the Greater Springfield NAACP, was inducted into the Martin Luther King Jr. Board of Preachers at Morehouse College in Atlanta. EDUCATION NEWS

  • Today, the Diocese of Springfield is launching a new safety task force to review and update protocols at schools and churches after recent acts of violence nationwide. Some schools have already added steps such as reinforced entryways—buzzer systems, cameras, and active shooter training—while law enforcement will help ensure these measures protect students and parishioners.  Western Mass News
  • Massachusetts education officials announced MCAS scores showing that only 13 districts met pre-pandemic levels in math and English language arts, including five districts in western Massachusetts and one Springfield charter school. Commissioner Patrick Tutwiler said districts will receive more support to help students catch up—focusing on issues like chronic absenteeism and overall student needs.  New England Public Media

  • Shannon O'Brien chaired her first Cannabis Control Commission meeting on Wednesday after winning a legal battle to regain her role. She said her return marks a new beginning—calling on the team to rebuild trust and focus on solutions for the agency.  New England Public Media
  • Agawam received a $125,000 check from the state on Thursday—secured from the Fair Share Supplemental Budget—to fund new roof designs for its four elementary schools. The district plans to replace the 1997 roofs over the next few years to keep school facilities in good shape.  Western Mass News
  • The Food Bank of Western Massachusetts is warning that a prolonged government shutdown may cause local food pantries to face shortages. Executive director Andrew Morehouse said the bank has enough supplies for three months but will reach out to private food retailers + expects higher demand if the shutdown continues.  Western Mass News

HEALTH NEWS

  • Officials in Springfield announced a partnership with the Hampden County Sheriff's Department at Johnny Appleseed Park on Thursday to clear discarded needles from selected parks—trained inmates will work daily. The health department said it will hire a harm reduction staffer and set up a hotline for residents to report needles in other areas.  New England Public Media
