  • MLK Family Services will host its Social Justice Awards on Oct. 18 to honor local change-makers, and the center will continue its Be Love Campaign in Mason Square—local leaders such as CEO Shannon Rudder are involved. A report by Way Finders and the Donahue Institute highlighted housing needs while Rep. Jim McGovern will soon address the government shutdown.  New England Public Media
  • Cats named Deep Fried Butter, Waffles and Oreo need new homes at Dakin Humane Society — the shelter hopes local families will adopt them soon.  MassLive

BUSINESS NEWS

  • BusinessWest launched a new video podcast on Sept. 29 — viewers can now watch BusinessTalk on YouTube Podcasts and Spotify while listening on Audacy and Apple Podcasts. The show features interviews with local business leaders and is produced in-house with support from Greenfield Cooperative Bank.  BusinessWest
  • Visual Sound Productions Inc. opened its new headquarters at 130 Union St. on Oct. 2 in a historic building that once was a church, sign shop, and nonprofit—company president Nicole Nell bought it to expand her award-winning production business.  BusinessWest

CULTURE NEWS

  • On Oct. 9 at 7 p.m., the Yiddish Book Center in Amherst will host acclaimed author Mikołaj Grynberg (with translator Sean Gasper Bye) to discuss Jewish life in Poland and hold a book signing. This event is one of only two U.S. appearances by the author and will be available in person and via livestream.  BusinessWest

HEALTH NEWS

  • Officials in Springfield announced an alliance with the Hampden County Sheriff during a press conference at Johnny Appleseed Park to address discarded needles in public areas by conducting daily cleanups and using low-risk inmates trained in needle handling—while the health department added a harm reduction staff member and hotline for reporting needles—aiming to improve community safety.  New England Public Media

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • A new report from UMass Amherst and local agency Way Finders shows that Western Massachusetts has a housing crisis as rising rents and a low supply put pressure on renters and homeowners. The study recommends easing regulations and increasing building permits to add over 17,000 units by 2035—helping to counter competition from short-term rentals and investor activity.  New England Public Media
