  • Recent research shows nearly 20 percent of Springfield's older adults work today, up from just over 10 percent in the 1980s. 81-year-old Sandy Miliefsky has launched community programs and fundraiser concerts—while 66-year-old Donna Lee Honeywell continues her hypnotherapy career after overcoming health challenges.  Western Mass News

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Massachusetts recorded 78 pedestrian deaths in 2024—a 16% increase from the year before—while national fatalities declined by 4.3%, with AAA Northeast warning that high-speed driving contributed to the rise.  Western Mass News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Officials from Springfield Symphony Hall and Mayor Domenic Sarno announced that $250,000 in funding will upgrade the historic venue—improving the production system curtains—and work will begin before upcoming performances.  Western Mass News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Three hundred high school students gathered at the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame on October 8 for the MassMakes Innovation Challenge to build robots and direct remote-controlled cars that show the link between math, science, and technology. Springfield Central High School students worked on projects that revealed how manufacturing and STEM open doors—fueling interest in future careers.  MassLive

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Maura Healey warned that illegal street takeovers, including coordinated drag racing and mass car rallies, will face zero tolerance after violent incidents over the weekend in several communities—State Police have been directed to work with local law enforcement to hold perpetrators accountable and residents are urged to call 911 if they notice suspicious activity.  New England Public Media
