- ➤ On October 1, former Hampden County Sheriff’s deputy John Deluca died after a 200-foot fall while hunting in Alaska—his son Dave, who also fell and performed CPR for three hours until a rescue helicopter arrived, is now aided by a fundraiser for medical and memorial expenses—as community members support his long service. - ➤ Springfield leaders celebrated the opening of a new Valley Bike station at Myrtle Park in Indian Orchard Friday. The new station added 100 e-bikes across 19 stations in the city and is the first to offer drop e-bikes that are lighter, more comfortable (with a longer range) than older models. Western Mass News
- ➤ Representatives from Tech Foundry and Comcast with Mayor Sarno and Councilor Delgado celebrated on October 23 a new initiative that will sponsor six months of Comcast Internet Essentials service for the first 25 individuals who finish a digital literacy program of 12 classes—Comcast will also donate laptops to the first 50 who complete six classes. - ➤ Massachusetts low-income families will lose SNAP benefits next month as the government shutdown halted federal funding, leaving over 1 million residents without food assistance. Gov. Healey said the state cannot cover the $240 million needed and Treasurer Deb Goldberg warned a cascade of emergencies—this will affect vulnerable children, seniors, and individuals with disabilities. - ➤ State officials announced a new plan to strengthen fire safety at assisted living facilities after 272 residences submitted responses following the deadly Gabriel House fire. The plan calls for local fire departments to verify annual fire code compliance and requires (36 facilities reporting gaps) to file corrective action plans within 45 days. MassLive
