COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Jillian Battles is hosting a donation day today at Shortstop Bar & Grill at 99 Springfield Road from 2 to 7 p.m. to collect supplies for 800 care bags stuffed with personal care items, games and snacks for area troops and veterans— the bags will be filled on Nov. 8 at Westover Barnes ANG base.  MassLive

CULTURE NEWS

  • FAB Passion Week in Springfield has brought together art, music, and fashion from local talent — featuring 13 designers — with Rival Galaxies having performed live on Friday at NEPM studios and Provisions hosting a whiskey thunderdome that paired two American spirits. The event also includes a performance series at A.P.E. Gallery in Northampton and a festival planned at Thornes Marketplace in Amherst later this weekend.  New England Public Media

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Federal employees at the Social Security offices in Springfield and Holyoke missed their Friday paycheck because of the federal shutdown—though they continued to work. Many have turned to gig work, loans from retirement accounts and public assistance to cover bills until the shutdown ends.  MassLive

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Two North End apartment buildings once part of the Farm Workers Council's plans were sold in a foreclosure auction on Friday at 17 East Hooker St.—Heriberto Flores, council president, no longer owns them. One building at 2718 Main St. still shows a 2015 permit and a June 2024 fire alarm inspection record.  MassLive

  • Springfield Central football beat the Minnechaug Falcons 42-14 at Berte Field on Friday as the team scored 21 points in the fourth quarter—turning the game in their favor.  MassLive
  • West Springfield football clinched a playoff spot with a 35-21 win over East Longmeadow—gaining a 28-point lead at halftime—on a memorable senior night.  MassLive
  • Frontier football won the Intercounty South conference title after defeating Springfield International 38—20 on Friday in South Deerfield. The team led by an 18-point halftime advantage and maintained its unbeaten record.  MassLive
